I was riding down the mountainside
When i heard a bird let out a sorrow cry
And I could not understand the words she sang
But I understood exactly what she meant

On the trail I learned what I was made out of
And I had no more substance than the sky above
But then it rained down on the branches overhead
And in that sound I knew there was something inside me yet

Then I turned a corner and I saw your face
And I tried to move but I just stayed in place
Then you took my hand and you closed my eyes
And you walked me down to watch the going tide

All the birds were flying all around our heads
And that sorrow cry became a roundelay
But then something sweetened in the way they sang
And I think that's how I found my heart that day

So if you should hear the cry of spirit birds
Listen though you never can make out the words
There is truth in every song I have yet heard
And the truth can heal as much as it can hurt
